The cave spider learned to fight

The cave spider's old attack was a circle around it that hurt you if you stood in it. Nothing wound up, nothing made a sound, and there was no dodging it. This week it became a fight.

The spider fight

  • It plants its feet and rears up for a bit under a second, then commits. The rear-up is your warning.
  • Out of reach, it spits silk instead of biting. The glob steers after you for about two seconds, then flies on straight. It can only turn so hard, so a late sidestep beats it. Standing still doesn't.
  • It fights at about five meters. Crowd it and it backs off, still facing you. Wander off and it closes in. Stand still and it circles.

Hunting

  • The bow has a sight: a dashed line shows the arrow's arc, and a ring marks where the point will land.
  • Chickens spook now. Creep up and you can get about a meter away; charge and they bolt at two and a half. A bird stops and stares before it runs, and that stare is your warning.
  • A chase can be won. Chickens outrun your walk, but they tire if you keep after them.
  • Any sharp edge opens a carcass: sword, spear, even an arrow, just slower than the dagger. Not the axe or pickaxe.
  • Raise a spear overhead and it locks level over your shoulder. You aim by looking; your arm only supplies the speed.
  • Spearfishing. Throw a spear, loose an arrow, or stab a held spear into the water and it can take a fish, which rides out on the shaft.

The first floor

The craft menu has tabs now, instead of one flat board of nine squares. On the building tab is the first thing you build by counting logs into it: a floor.

  • Put the blueprint down and a see-through frame counts the logs it needs. Hold a log over it and it's taken in a puff of smoke. At six, the real floor drops in, snapped to a grid.
  • The log has to be in your hands. One lying on the frame is your woodpile, not payment.
  • Blueprints show a small picture of each ingredient with a count, instead of words.
  • Building has a support limit. Anything standing only on other builds gets a little less support than what holds it up. Run out and you can't place, so put a pillar under it.

Voices you can hear

Voices used to be muffled by anything in the way and echo like a stone chamber under any tree. Now distance is the whole thing: full volume out to three meters, half at six, still there at a hundred. Shouting across a clearing works.

Smaller changes

  • Health and hunger moved off the floating panel and onto curved bands on your forearm.
  • Falling hurts you now, not just animals. It goes off how fast you hit, not how far you fell.
  • The campfire is a new fire: pointed tongues, a white-hot core and embers with tails, not an orange smudge.
  • Swimming starts when your head reaches the surface, not when the water is chest deep.
  • Smooth turning no longer looks like fast snap turning, and thrown rocks stopped stuttering.
  • A tool you just crafted is yours for a few seconds before anyone else can take it.

Watch for the rear-up.
